Projects: “Aprons”

Aprons 1 and Aprons 2 are works inspired by an article about a female referee in a futbol match who was told to “stick to the kitchen” by a field player. This act of misogyny was a motivator to examine the apron simultaneously as symbolic of vulnerability and strength, precarity and stability, and sacrifice and opportunity. The first series of 6 was approached as monotypes to take advantage of the transitory and unpredictable nature of the medium and then each was hand-altered with paint, collage, charcoal, artist’s pen or combinations of these. Aprons are practical garments offering a barrier of protection from stains while cooking and cleaning. They can represent resourcefulness passed down from previous generations and creativity in the kitchen. On the other hand, they can reinforce traditional gender roles to keep women tied to domestic life and household tasks. Ultimately, my aprons suggest female energy.
