Projects: “Mannequins”
My fascination with mannequins stems from memories of conversations with aunts who worked to support the family while their brothers served in World War II. Like many women who sacrificed at home for the war effort, these aunts were obligated to work in a sweatshop laboring under outrageous conditions for six years surrounded by filth, thread and dust. Because of their sacrifices, families held together. One one my aunts later realized her full potential as a well-known designer of hats for women, including a pillbox made especially for Jackie Kennedy.
