Projects: “Painted Quilts”

The study of authentic quilts led me to produce a series of works that embody themes of comfort and protection; however, a negative connotation of inequality and emotional hurt is occasionally buried beneath the patterned surface of a quilt. In most households, the woman creates the deep connections of soothing love and the quilt pattern is representative of that bond. The intricate motifs represent living, thriving bits of energy and are based on the tenderness revealed in organic designs from nature. In some works, thread has been used to sew and bind together the myriad images into a single painting. The antique quilt pieces depicted are preserved and restated in acrylic paint and combined with portraits of women.
